Heritage Trips in Accra: Sites, Prices and How to Book
Heritage trips in Accra bring Ghana’s independence story into one city. In a single day you can stand where the nation’s first president declared independence, visit the home of W.E.B. Du Bois, and walk through Black Star Square. Ghana marks 70 years of independence on 6 March 2027, so there has never been a better time to go.
Heritage Trips in Accra: The heritage sites worth your day
W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre. The home of the Father of Pan Africanism. Dr. Du Bois was invited by Ghana’s first president to edit the Encyclopedia Africana. The center holds his personal belongings, gifts and books, and the mausoleum of Dr. Du Bois and his wife.
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. The site where Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, declared independence. It includes a museum of his personal belongings, gifts and books, and the mausoleum where he and his wife are buried.
Independence Square (Black Star Square). Built in 1961 for national gatherings, it can hold about 30,000 people. Look for the Independence Arch, the Monument of Liberation and the Independence Gate.
Arts and Crafts Market. A place for Ghanaian made dresses, shirts, carvings, paintings, kente and Northern smock fabrics. Sellers are persuasive, so bargain with a smile.
Fantasy coffin workshop. Funerals in Ghana celebrate a life, so coffins are shaped around what the person did and loved: a fish or boat for a fisherman, a shoe for a shoemaker.
What it costs
Entry fees. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park publishes its rates for non Ghanaian visitors: GHS 100 for adults, GHS 60 for tertiary students and GHS 30 for children. That is roughly US$9 for an adult. Fees and hours at the other sites change, so confirm before you go.
A guided tour: our 3 Day Ghana Sightseeing tour starts with an Accra city tour covering these sites. It costs €438 per person, based on two travelers, without accommodation. It includes all entrance fees, daily hotel pick up and drop off, and a professional guide. Meals, accommodation and tips are not included.
A simple one day plan
Start at the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre in the late morning.
Continue to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
Stop at the Arts and Crafts Market for souvenirs.
Finish at Independence Square, close to the Osu Christiansborg Castle.
Add the fantasy coffin workshop if you have time.
Dress respectfully at the mausoleums, and carry some cash for the market. Most travelers need a full day, so don’t schedule much else.
